Sonohyan Utaki Stone Gate
print

A stone shrine where prayers were offered for the king's safety when he traveled outside the castle compound
Sonohyan Utaki Stone Gate was a place of worship for the King during the Ryukyu Kingdom era and is located along the road behind Shureimon. When the king left the castle he would pray here for a safe return. This is also the first worship place that the King would visit when he would leave the castle for worship pilgrim or for the inauguration of the Ryukyu supreme priestess, the Kikoe Ogimi. Except for the door, this undulating bargeboard gate is completely made of stone. However, with its sculpted bargeboard pendants, it gives an impression of a being a wooden building.
