The Nakamura House
print

The grand residence of a wealthy farming family, built with some of the best wood materials
The Nakamura family is said to have been the municipal head of the Nakagusuku region in the Kingdom era. Their house is said to have been built during the mid-18th century using primarily Japanese yew and Japanese Ternstroemia, with a red-tiled roof (thatched roofs were predominant at the time). The land where the house sits had been slanted, but was flattened to an extent to build the house. The house itself is protected by stone stacks in all directions except south, where there is a stone fence with an entrance gate and huge stone slabs called Hinpun (talisman said to ward of evil spirits). On the premises there are: the Asagi (an annex building), a storage, a pigsty/bathroom, a well, all surrounded by Fukugi trees.
