2012: Sakura Matsuri -Japan's earliest Cherry Blossom Festival-

The beautiful color of pink brightening the moss green mountains in
Okinawa is a visible sign of spring making its way to the island. In this
case, the color pink refers to the beautiful flowering cherry trees in
bloom.
Known as the earliest to blossom in Japan, this variety of cherry tree
(Prunus campanulata Maxim.) primarily coming from Taiwan or southern
China, is commonly called the Taiwan cherry.
Rosy-pink flowers drooping like bells blossom beginning in mid-January in
mainland Okinawa. Their peak around the end of Jauary, and enjoyed until
early February.

Motobu Town, located on the Motobu Peninsula in the northern region of
mainland Okinawa, is where this cherry blossom festival is held every
year, as nearly 7,000 Taiwan cherries come in full bloom in mid-January.
Mt. Yae, 453 m high, would get covered with a veil of pink, delighting the
eyes of visitors.
You can either walk or drive a car up the mountan full of cherry trees.

Nago Central Park, where Nago Castle ruins remain, is one of the most
attractive locations of cherry blossoms in Okinawa.
Enjoy the stroll around the beautiful park filled with 20,000 Taiwan
cherry trees with deep rosy-pink flowers in profusion. By climbing up to
the observatory, an amazing beauty of emrald green ocean together with the
pink cheery blossoms can be overviewed.
For the park is located at the base of deep mountains, you will also be
able to enjoy nature through subtropical forests and small streams.
Equipped with recreation play ground, the park is also popular among small
children.

Naha's cherry blossoms are expected to be at their peak around the
beginning of February, and enjoyed for about 2 weeks.
As Okinawa's Taiwan cherry blossoms bloom from North to South, there is
still a chance to enjoy the graceful rosy-pink flowers, even if you have
missed the flowers of Northern Okinawa.
Yogi Park, where the festival will be held is located in central Naha,
only 15 min. away from Naha Airport. It is a fine place for a little
stroll as there are nearly 400 cherry blossom trees along the river.
There will be booths selling plants, flowers, and food.
