Haarii boats advancing boldly with the wind and cutting the blue waves.
On this day, crowds of onlookers jostle for position as drums pound and flutes sing along the shore to cheer on the courageous figures rowing forcefully ahead.
Tradition holds that if the Haarii bell echoes, then the rainy season is over and summer is finally in full swing. According to Uminchu (Okinawan dialect for fisherman) who give thanks for the sea's bounty and pray for a good harvest and safe fishing, this magnificent festival represents the fanfare of Okinawa's long summer.
