News & Topics Impact of the Great East Japan Earthquake on Okinawa Prefecture
Japan has been making every effort to restore the damages caused by the earthquake which occurred on March 11, 2011. We received a significant amount of support and encouragement from all over the world, which we truly appreciate.
Fortunately, Okinawa Prefecture has not been affected by the earthquake or the nuclear crisis, and we are carrying on with our daily lives without any hindrance. Please rest assured that all tourists will be able to enjoy their stay in Okinawa as normal.
1. Impact of the earthquake on Okinawa Prefecture
(1) Earthquake
Okinawa Prefecture is far away from the epicenter and no aftershocks or tsunami have been recorded in the prefecture.
(2) Nuclear Plant Accident
Okinawa Prefecture is 1,760km(1,100miles) away from the nuclear plant and it is not within the evacuation zone, which is within a radius of 20km(12 miles), or within the emergency evacuation preparation zone, which is within a radius of 30km(19 miles), from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. The radiation levels in Okinawa are not higher than those of other major cities around the world.

(3) Air/sea travel to/from Okinawa and tourist facilities in the prefecture
All air routes and sea routes to/from Okinawa are available as usual. All transportation systems, tourist facilities including shops, restaurants and hotels in Okinawa are operating as normal.
