Okinawa Prefecture, the southernmost region in Japan, consists of 160 large and small islands. Okinawa has a long history of trade with Asian countries such as China. The footsteps of Okinawa including the formation of the original Ryukyu Kingdom are different from anywhere else in Japan. Okinawa's unique history can still be seen in various places around Okinawa.

The culture of Okinawa formed under the influence of various countries since the era of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Lacquerware with its beautiful contrast between red and black, dyed and woven textiles displaying the characteristics of each island, and traditional dance in colorful costumes are just some examples of Okinawan culture that have been passed down through the ages to this day.

Okinawan food is also known for contributing to the longevity of the Okinawan people. This unique food culture differs from regular Japanese food and was strongly influenced by various partner countries in trade. Culture/customs are so varied that each village is said to have original characteristics. The local dialect is also diversified, so much so that even if you are from one of the islands in Okinawa, you may have difficulty understanding people from the other islands.
