Itoman Great Tug of War
September 22, 2010 A tug-of-war competition to mark the end of the summer in this fishery town.
The Itoman Great Tug-of-War is held every year on August 15 (lunar calendar) in Itoman City, the town of fishermen. It is a ceremonial event to wish for a year of rich harvest and bumper catch. The rope used for this event is hand made by the citizens of Itoman, is also called Suninzuna (people's rope), and measures 180 m in length and 1.5 m in diameter. Anybody can participate in the event, which is held by closing off a national road. A costume parade warms up the crowd before the great tug-of-war bout.
